Reckless Gate
v0.21A noise gate: it turns the output down whenever the signal falls below the Threshold, so the gaps between notes are silent. Open, it is a wire.
From the user guide
Setting it up
The meter’s KEY lane is the level the gate hears, GATE the gain it applies; the green marker is the Threshold. Play the part and put the marker between where the noise reaches and where the playing reaches. No gap? Use SC Highpass or the sidechain, which a host must route.
Controls
| Close-up | Control | Range | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() | Threshold | −80 to 0 dB | −60 dB | The level the key must reach to open the gate. |
![]() | Hysteresis | 0 to 24 dB | 3 dB | How far below Threshold the key falls before closing. |
![]() | Attack | 0.05 to 100 ms | 1 ms | Time to open across Range. |
![]() | Hold | 1 to 100 ms | 10 ms | Time held open after the key falls away. |
![]() | Release | 5 to 3000 ms | 150 ms | Time to close across Range. |
![]() | Range | −90 to 0 dB | −60 dB | How far down the shut gate goes; 0 dB does nothing. |
![]() | SC Source | Internal / External | Internal | Listen to the signal itself, or the sidechain input. |
![]() | SC Highpass | Off / 60 / 120 / 250 / 500 Hz | Off | A highpass on the key alone, never the output. |
Tips
- Set Range last: get the gate opening right at 0 dB, then lower it only as needed.
- Chatter wants Hysteresis, not a higher Threshold; a chopped decay wants Hold, not Release.
- Tom gate opening on the kick: SC Highpass at 250 or 500 Hz.
- Distorted guitar: key it from the dry signal ahead of the distortion, SC Source External.
